Stay Safe This Harvest Season

That time of year is just around the corner. We don’t know what it will look like just yet nor what the harvest will bring, but we need to be prepared. Sunvalley Tire is here to help you with our top Harvest Safety Tips.

1. TIRES

Doing a thorough inspection of equipment tires is an important first step that is often overlooked. Visually inspect all tires for any wears or tears, cracks or foreign objects. Next, check all bolts and lug nuts for any loose, corroded or worn parts. Also, ensure that your tires are inflated to the appropriate level. Unsure of the best air pressure for your situation? 2. EQUIPMENT SAFETY

The farm can pose many dangers. Ensure that yourself and all others know the rules. Regular safety checks is an important addition to your farming routine. Using a daily maintenance checklist will go a long way toward keeping you safe.

Some things to add to your checklist: all fluid levels, fuel and hydraulic lines, steering and brakes, lights, ensure all areas of equipment are free of debris and keep fire extinguishers, flares, and a first aid kit on hand.

3. PERSONAL SAFETY

*Emergency plans are a valuable tool if the time ever comes to need it. Know where everyone is and what time to expect to hear from them again.

*Open up the doors before starting a tractor in the shop/garage

*Don’t wear loose clothing

*If you are tired, STOP. You put yourself and others at risk when you drive tired

*Practice grain bin safety. The University of Minnesota goes into detail giving valuable information on this.

4. BE AWARE
Always be aware. Be aware of equipment condition. We cannot fully rely on technology for monitoring temperatures and pressures or GPS. The equipment operator is still responsible for equipment safety.

Be aware of any potential dangers. Be aware of individuals on the farm, where they are located and what they are doing. Be aware of all your surroundings. As you open your eyes to your surroundings, you ensure a safer harvest season.

5. BE RELATIONAL
Our final tip to keep your harvest season safe is to be relational. Develop relationships. Know your neighbours. Know who and where you can go to and who to call if an emergency arises. Look out for each other and keep in touch during the harvest season.

Develop deep relationships with your family, friends and workers on the farm. Know their fears, their skills and weak points. Help another out where they need help and know who you can go to when YOU need help.

From our wheels to yours, we wish you a safe and blessed harvest season!
